There has been a bit in the news recently about refugees from Syria.
New Zealand has always welcomed refugees, starting with refugees from Denmark in the 1870s. You can read about our history of refugee resettlement here.. http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/refugees
In the 1970s and 80s New Zealand welcomed refugees from Cambodia, and amongst them was one of our former teachers, Ms Mey. In 2009 Ms Mey and students from Room 5 created a Big Book where she told her story. This has now been made into an e-book!

Mr Lim, owner of the Lim Supermarket right here in Mt Albert, was a refugee from Cambodia. He came from Cambodia in 1981, and opened the Lim Supermarket in 1999. On the wall is a banner depicting his home in Cambodia as it looked in 1975.
