Dot.

Dot is a girl who knows her way around electronics, computers, devices and online ways of communicating...

But its good to look at the world outside a screen...

Dot remembers that there's lots of cool things to do and see and be in the world...

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR...

Randi Zuckerberg is the sister of Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg. She used to work for Facebook and was in  charge of marketing.

Here's what she thinks about the use of social media and technology....

Q: Since you mention social media, what are some of the good and bad aspects of the social-media dominated world we live in?
A: This is my favorite question. It’s actually at the root of my book that recently came out. My book is called “Dot Complicated,” and it basically addresses this exact issue. In so in many ways, it’s made our lives amazing and wonderful. Imagine back just 20 years ago and meeting a friend with no GPS and no cell phone. How did we ever meet up with people? I don’t know. You had to use a pay phone and a paper map. So technology has made our lives so amazing, convenient, fast and easy.
At the same time, though, all you have to do is look around and you see people who are buried in their phones instead of talking to people and they’re on the phone when they’re driving and putting themselves and other people in danger. It’s almost like we’ve crossed this line where, in some ways, the text that was supposed to make our lives easier and bring us closer to the people we love can sometimes now get in the way … We have to think about how we can be more responsible with the tech in our own lives.

A Refugee's Story

There has been a bit in the news recently about refugees from Syria. New Zealand has always welcomed refugees, starting with refugees from Denmark in the 1870s. You can read about our history of refugee resettlement here.. http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/refugees

In the 1970s and 80s New Zealand welcomed refugees from Cambodia, and amongst them was one of our former teachers, Ms Mey. In 2009 Ms Mey and students from Room 5 created a Big Book where she told her story. This has now been made into an e-book!

READ... Ms Mey's story here!

DID YOU KNOW?

Mr Lim, owner of the Lim Supermarket right here in Mt Albert, was a refugee from Cambodia. He came from Cambodia in 1981, and opened the Lim Supermarket in 1999. On the wall is a banner depicting his home in Cambodia as it looked in 1975.
