'Yak and Gnu' book launch!

On Saturday I was lucky enough to be at the launch of a brand new book - Yak and Gnu - written by Juliette MacIver and illustrated by Cat Chapman.

Juliette and Cat were both there, and signed a copy of their book for our school!

Juliette shared how she came up with the concept for Yak and Gnu while writing Toucan Can, showed us her favourite illustration from the book, and then read the book to an attentive audience.  Yak and Gnu is a fun book with lots of rhyming. I'd recommend asking your class teacher to read this one out loud!

Delightful original illustrations on display

Juliette shares her favourite illustratrion - the giraffes on hovercrafts. Illustrator Cat is to the left.

Race Relations Day

Its Race Relations Day on Friday 21st March, and we hold our celebrations on Friday 20th March. This is one of our favourite days of the year!

The diversity of cultures and ethnicities in our school is what makes it really special, and Race Relations Day is a time to share the awesome things about our own. We share food, dress up and learn more about each other.

Books celebrating children all over the world

Our school library has some books about children all over the world. Children Just Like Me features a young Maori girl alongside children from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

excerpt from Prejudice and Difference by Paul Wignall.
Available in non fiction, call number 303

Sometimes our differences aren't celebrated, and we need to stick up for ourselves and our friends. We have a few books that deal with how to manage racism, and other kinds of prejudice.

Our Race Relations Day is a fun way to learn about each other and break down any barriers to understanding. Make sure you check out the school website for photos on the day!!

Welcome!

We love our library at Owairaka District School!

We welcome classes through the day, and children are able to visit during lunchtimes to read, relax and take part in quiet activities like board games, book club and drawing.

We look forward to keeping you up to date with library news.
