Reading, Writing and Mathematics are birds of a feather and they flock together.

Have you ever heard the expression "birds of a feather, flock together" before? Well it simply means that people who think and feel the same way, will most likely become friends and spend time together. Believe it or not Literacy (Reading/Writing) and Mathematics are two of our core learning areas, and they have the same feathers!!!

At our school, we have to read our mathematical problems in order to solve them. This is great as it encourages us to think, talk and then decide how we will solve the problem. Here is an example of a problem solving question;

We go to the ice cream parlour and buy 17 ‘triple scoop’ ice creams.
How many scoops of ice cream is that altogether?

In our library, we have loads of books that we could sit and read that relate to Mathematics.
Helen has created this wonderful display.

I challenge you to visit our library and read these books!

Reading in the holidays.

Over the next two weeks it is important that you keep reading and learning. Remember that through reading a book you can visit amazing places (real and imagined), learn about amazing people and all of the things that make our world a wonderful place to live in.

Fill up your HOLIDAY READING LOG and I challenge you to even rule up lines on the back and fill those up to.

Visit your public library or enjoy reading your Duffy books.

Matariki

This month is Matariki.

Matariki celebrates the Maori New Year. It is a special time to celebrate with your whanau and friends.

We can celebrate Matariki in many ways:
  • it is time for sharing family stories.
  • for learning about the land and how to look after it.
  • it is time for hearing stories of the old days, for learning about how people used the stars in the past.
  • It is time to plant trees and winter crops.
  • It is time to fish and gather kaimoana.
  • It is time for making things, to learn to weave and carve.
  • It is time for making and flying kites.

GREEN WEEK- Kaitiakitanga

This term our focus for Green Week was understanding the Maori world view of Kaitiakitanga. Kaitiakitanga means guardianship or protection, and  Kaitiaki  (people who care for our world) are considered to be guardians of our whenua (land).

During the week, there has been a display acknowledging our passion for Green Week.

These books are always in the library. You can read them anytime of the year, not just during Green Week!!!.

Remember at Owairaka, we are all KAITIAKI!!!
